Children should not be a battleground, but if a custody fight is inevitable and necessary, we will be there for you.

  • Child custody in a divorce: Children generally benefit from having both parents involved in their lives. Our lawyers can work with you and your spouse to determine a custody and visitation agreement that meets the needs of the children and respects the rights of the parents.
  • Albright analysis: When a child custody agreement cannot be reached between the parents, the family court may use what is called an Albright analysis to determine custody issues. The analysis grades the parents on issues such as morality, employment responsibilities, parental health, the children's ages, evidence of abuse (sexual, physical, emotional), and alleged substance abuse.
  • Child support: The amount of child support is determined by statute. The noncustodial parent's adjusted gross income is part of the formula. Disagreements can arise about what the adjusted gross income is.
  • Child custody modifications: After the divorce is final, circumstances often change. A parent moves out of state, financial circumstances change, a child's needs change. Talk to a child custody lawyer about petitioning the court for a change in custody or support.
  • Paternity actions: When the parents are not married, there is a need to establish paternity so that both parents share in the rights and responsibilities of parenthood.
  • Grandparent rights: In a divorce or in a case of unfit parents, what are the rights of grandparents? If you are concerned about your access to your grandchildren or about you grandchildren's well-being, talk to an attorney about grandparent rights.
  • Guardianship, conservatorship: In some circumstances, you may need to establish a guardianship to assure there is someone who has the authority to care for a child. Conservatorships are used to manage financial resources for a minor child or an adult unable to manage finances.
